In August of 2018, Alvin RC Club lost one of our most dedicated and well-liked club members, Mike Vawters. As our vice-president and safety officer, he provided our club with invaluable leadership and expertise through the years. This year’s Fun Fly is to honor him for his contributions to the club and to the hobby. This event was his idea of having a Charity Fund Raiser Fun Fly Event to welcome other clubs to our flying field just to have an enjoyable day of flying and camaraderie.

The field is in beautiful shape, aerated, filled, rolled, and the grass is in good shape. Guests and AMA Pilots are welcome, and Pilots please bring your AMA Membership card. Hopefully, unlike our April event which we had to cancel, we will have good weather this time and a great event for all!
A Flyer follows – a number of the Texas Warbird thunder group are planning to attend so we will have some beautiful planes and a super show. We’ll have hamburgers Saturday, all the trimmings, drinks, and plenty of deserts. A brand new VQ Spitfire ARF is waiting to be raffled off, and needs only minor assembly, engine, servos, and receiver. If possible, a food donation for local needy children would be greatly appreciated.
So – bring come on out and fly what you got; or kick the tires and buy, sell or trade airplanes, parts, and equipment! We’ll have a great time and look forward to seeing you-all!
Do not forget the meeting this Saturday. Ken White has volunteered to present the history of a model he will be donating to the AMA Museum. See the outline below..….everyone should make an effort to come see the model and hear about the flight. RegardsTom Johnson
The Pewter Mule by Ken White The presentation will be about the history and flight of a model called the Pewter Mule, built by NASA engineers in the late 70’s to continue the proof of concept for the space shuttle orbiter. It is a rocket which carried a 1/40th rc scale model of the space shuttle. It used 24 D-12 Estes rocket motors. The flight took place in 1979, 40 years ago. The rocket was found at an estate sale by me and I recognized it immediately because I was there when it flew. I acquired the model and have been working the last few weeks getting it accepted by the AMA Museum. I just got the email from the museum committee that it was accepted. I plan to bring the model to the meeting to discuss it’s history for those interested.
Do not forget that this coming Saturday, June 22 is the monthly Alvin RC meeting. Get there early to beat the heat and fly. Attached are the minutes from the last meeting. Also, the work party schedules for June 22 is postponed.
